He may be the David born in Nevay and christened 27 May 1747 in Eassie & Nevay, the son of William Doig, brewer in Kirkinch of Nevay, and Elizabeth Nicol.  David’s son William was named after William Doig.  See file WILL1711.  Other possibilities exist from Kirriemuir.

 

David had a son in fornication by Susan White.  The child was born at Gateside of Eassie, a village on the road between Glamis and Kirriemuir.

 

David was in a non-marital relationship with (MRIN:1) Susan White in Not Married. Susan was born about 1751 in Of Eassie, Angus, Scotland.

She may be the Susann White christened 6 Jan 1751 in Meigle, Perth, daughter of John White.

The death date is uncertain that it is this David Doig, but he lived in the area, and his wife was a widow when she was buried in the same graveyard.

3.   David Doig (David, David) was born in 1794/1795 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. He died on 16 Jul 1872 in Cable's Close, Wellgate, Dundee, Angus, Scotland.

David was born several years before his parents were married. They are listed on his death certificate.

 

From 1819 to 1833 David was a shoemaker.  In 1841 David was a vintner living on Argyle Close, Dundee; his wife was not with him, but Helen and William were at home.  In 1851 David was a shoemaker living at 3 Batter Street, Dundee; with him were his wife and daughter, Isabella.  In 1861 he was a shoemaker living at 62 Ballie Street, Dundee, and his wife and daughter, Isabella, were still at home.

 

David's wife witnessed his death certificate.

 

David married (MRIN:4) Janet Crabb, daughter of David Crabb and Elizabeth Milne (MRIN:7), on 21 Dec 1819 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. Janet was born in 1788/1789 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. She died on 4 Jun 1879 in 7 Morrison's Court, Dundee, Angus, Scotland from general debility of old age.

William went to sea as a boy in the Merchant Service at the age of 14. He registered on 19 June 1845 in Dundee, certificate #115498. He was described as 4’ 8½” tall, fair hair, hazel eyes, fair complexion, and with a cut on the brow. The certificate was cancelled after a voyage in 1846. He reregistered on 16 Oct 1847, certificate #201685.  He was listed as scrawny.  He sailed last on a steamer in Dundee on 2 Oct 1847, and soon after this certificate was canceled because “of hatred to sea.”

David went to sea as an apprentice on 8 Jan 1836.  He served 2 years and 8 months in the Royal Navy.  He registered in the Merchant Service on 17 Mar 1845 at Dundee, listing his residence as Argyle Close, Dundee.  Certificate #77,573 lists him as 5’8¾”, dark brown hair, fair complexion, and black eyes.  His last voyage was listed in 1848.

 

David married (MRIN:8) Agnes Ramsay Mudie, daughter of David Mudie and Mary Buist (MRIN:21), on 21 Mar 1848 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. Agnes was born on 16 Aug 1822 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. She was christened on 25 Aug 1822 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. She died on 10 Jun 1907 in Claremont, Cape Town, South Africa. She was buried in Maitland Cemetery, Cape Town, South Africa.

In 1861 Isabella was an unmarried, steam loom worker, living with her parents at 44 Albert Street, Dundee.  Isabella had an illegitimate child in 1864.  In 1879 she witnessed her mother’s death certificate and signed her name “X.” In 1881 she was a mangle keeper living at 7 Morrison’s Court, Dundee. In 1891 she lived in St. Clement, Dundee.

 

She had the following children.

16. David Scot Doig (William, David, David) was born on 20 May 1829 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. He was christened on 31 May 1829 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland. He died on 19 Jun 1868 in Uorn Street, Alyth, Perth, Scotland from heart disease of many years and dropsy after 4 months.

David married (MRIN:13) Ann Lyon, daughter of Agnes Lyon, on 5 Jun 1847 in Ruthven, Angus, Scotland. Ann was born in 1823/1824 in Carmyllie, Angus, Scotland. She died on 18 Sep 1901 in 13 Brechin Road, Kirriemuir, Angus, Scotland from maliginant disease of intestines.

The link to parents is uncertain and based on place of birth and Lyon family there. Ann's daughter Isabella did not know the names of her parents.

 

In 1881 Ann lived at 27 Victoria Street, Dundee with her daughter and son-in-law, George Ford. In 1891 Ann Doig, widow, age 67 born in Carmyllie, was an annuitant living alone on Smythe Street, Alyth. In 1901 Ann and her unmarried daughter Isabella (house keeper, age 45) resided at 13 Brechin Road, Kirriemuir.

 

Witness to Ann's death was her daughter Isabella Doig who only supplied her father's surname, Lyon.

 

They pledged marriage on 23 May 1847 in Meigle, Perth. David was listed from Meigle and Ann from Ruthven.

         41   F     vi.   Sophia Doig was born on 24 Feb 1857 in Bendochy, Perth, Scotland. She died in 1930 in St. Clement, Dundee, Angus, Scotland.

In 1881 Sophia was a jute mill worker living in Alyth.  Her brother, John, lived with her. In 1891 she lived St. Peter, Dundee.

 

Sophia married (MRIN:34) Thomas Cuthbert in 1895 in Alyth, Perth, Scotland. Thomas was born about 1857 in Scotland.

         42   M   vii.   David Doig was born on 15 Jan 1859 in Bendochy, Perth, Scotland. He died on 4 Apr 1862 in Leutfie, Alyth, Perth, Scotland from burn on the arm and side after 10 days, due to tetanus after 3 days.

He came to the US at the age of 20, settled first in Boston, where he remained for two years, and later came to Springfield. He was married to the former Velma Case Fero of Springfield. besides his wife he leaves one son, James Doig of Springfield; Two daughters, Mrs. Mary Stone of Easthamption and Mrs. Taddeus Suleski of Northampton; one stepson, Robert M. Fero of West Springfield; two sisters, Mrs. Henrietta Morrison of Hollywood Fla., and Mrs. Isabella Young of Pompano Beach, Fla.; a brother, Albert Doig of Palm Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the O'Brien funeral home in Easthampton. Burial will be at the Oakgrove Cemetery, Springfield. In 1910 Albert lived with his brother William in Boston; it records he was a machinist who entered the US in 1909. He appears to have returned to Scotland. Albert departed Glasgow on 21 Jan 1911 on the ship "Sicilian" and arrived at Boston on 5 Feb 1911; his contact was his father Edward S. Doig of 4 Smith Street, Dundee. Alfred Doig - Obituary in Metrowest Daily News, Monday, February 20, 2006 __WESTWOOD -- Alfred R. Doig, 91, a resident of Westwood since 1948, died Friday, Feb. 17, 2006, at the Newton-Wellesley Alzheimer’s Center in Wellesley, after a brief illness.

 

He was the husband of the late Lillian June (Stidham) Doig.

 

Born in Dundee, Scotland, the son of Albert P. and Mary (Lowden) Doig, he attended Boston University before joining the U.S. Army. He served two combat tours in the South Pacific with the Americal Division during World War II, and was discharged with the rank of major. He retired from the Massachusetts National Guard as a Lt. Colonel after 30 years, beginning in the 110th Cavalry and later, with the 180th Field Artillery.

 

Mr. Doig worked for 51 years as a manager for the John Hancock Insurance Co. in Boston until his retirement in 1982. He was the National Commander of the Americal Division Veterans Association, a member of the Dugout Club (consisting of retired officers of the Massachusetts National Guard), a member of Constellation Lodge AF & AM of Dedham, and a member of the Islington Community Church in Westwood.

 

He leaves his son, Alfred R. Doig Jr. of Natick; two sisters, Mary Nicholson of South Dartmouth, and Jessie Clark of Ohio; and his two grandsons, Ian and Andrew Doig.

 

He was the father of Douglas W. Doig, who was killed in action in 1966 in Vietnam.

 

A funeral service will be held Thursday, Feb. 23, at 10 a.m., at the First Baptist Church, 808 High St., Westwood, with the Reverend Lawrence Whitlock officiating.

 

Private burial will be in Blue Hill Cemetery in Braintree.

 

Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, Feb 22, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at the Folsom Funeral Home, 649 High St. (Rt. 109), Westwood with a Masonic Service by Constellation Lodge AF & AM of Dedham at 8 p.m.

WESTWOOD - Lillian June (Stidham) Doig, 91, a resident of Westwood since 1948, died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, at her home in Westwood after a long illness.

 

She was the wife of Alfred R. Doig. Born Dec. 25, 1914, in Boston, the daughter of the late Lillian M. (Duplisea) and Raymond W. Stidham, she attended Katharine Gibbs School in Boston and was an active member of the former Islington Community Church in Westwood.

 

Besides her husband, she leaves her son, Alfred R. Doig Jr. of Natick; two grandchildren, Ian and Andrew Doig; and several nieces and nephews.

 

She was the mother of Douglas W. Doig, who was killed in action in 1966 in Vietnam, and sister of the late Elizabeth F. Steen.

 

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 4, at noon at First Baptist Church, 808 High St. (Rte. 109), Westwood. Burial will be private.

 

Visiting hours are Wednesday, Jan. 4, from 11 a.m. to noon, at the church.
