Notes for Andrew Doig

Witnesses at Andrew's christening were James Wingate of Balloonton and John Henderson. Andrew later gave his birth date as 29 Feb as 1776 was a leap year; this was probably as a joke where he only aged one year in four.

Andrew arrived in Washington County, New York in the late 1790s. He was a teacher and surveyor. He married first Annis Wheeler in 1798. In 1799 they lived in Salem, NY. In 1800 they lived in Argyle, Washington Co., NY (page 482) with 1 male under 10, 3 males 16-26, and under 10; Andrew and Annis were 26-45.

In 1801 Robert Doig (1773-1852) arrived in New York from Thornhill, Perthshire. Robert stayed at the home of Andrew and Annis, which was then two or three miles southwest of East Greenwich.

Annis died in 1805, and the new father was left with two small children to raise. The young Paul was left with a relative, James Shaw, who later adopted the boy.

Andrew married second Polly Thompson in 1807. In 1809 Andrew, Polly and Andrew Wheeler moved to Lowville in the newly opened Lewis County, and there they raised their family. In 1810 Andrew is listed in Lewis Co., page 116 (11010-00100-00). In 1820 (page 27) (100010-20110-0100); he lived between Seymour Murray and Edward Thompson. He appears in the 1825 NY State Cenus in Lowville. Andrew is listed in Lowville, Lewis Co. in the 1835 NY State Census. In 1840 he lived in Lowville (page 38) with his wife, one son, and one daughter. By 1850 the children had all moved out, and the value of Andrew's property was $2,000.00.

Andrew became a naturalized citizen of the U.S. on 17 Sept 1828 in Lowville (File #A14).

Notes for Annis Wheeler

In 1790 there were five Wheelers in Washington Co., NY: Thomas Wheeler (Hebron - 1/1/3 ); Ephraim Wheeler (Salem - 2/2/6); Edward Wheeler (Salem - 1/0/5); Samuel Wheeler (Westfield - 1/1/4); and William Wheeler (Westfield - 1/1/1). William and Samuel lived next to each other. [males 16+/males under 16/females]

The link to father Ehphraim is based on his having a daughter Annes and having lived and died in Washington Co., NY. Although this Annes was 9 years older than Andrew, there may not have been a lot choices for partners at that time.

Notes for Polly Thompson

The link to father is base on Edward Thompson living near Andrew Doig in Lowville, and the age of Edward and having a daughter her age in 1790 in Granby, CT. In 1850 census Polly is listed from Scotland. In 1880 her daughter Betsey reported her born in CT, and daughter Janette reported her born in VT.

Generation 2

2. Andrew Wheeler2 Doig (Andrew1), born 24 Jul 1799 in Salem, Washington Co., NY; died 11 Jul 1875 in Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY; buried in Lowville Rural Cemetery, Lowville, Lewis Co., NY. He married Elisabeth (Bagg) Doig, born 1804/05 in NY; buried 15 Sep 1869 in Lowville Rural Cemetery, Lowville, Lewis Co., NY, daughter of James Bagg and Sybil ((---)) Bagg.

Notes for Andrew Wheeler Doig

Andrew's mother died in 1805. His father remarried, and in 1809 they moved to Lowville, Lewis County, NY.

Andrew became active in politics. In 1825 he was the Town Clerk in Lowville, and from 1 Jan 1826 for two terms of 3 years each as the Lewis County Clerk. In 1830 he lived in Martinsburg, NY and returned to Lowville by 1833. In 1832 he was elected a member of the New York State Assembly, and was on the Judiciary Committee. He was a Surrogate (probate) Judge from 28 Feb 1835 to 6 Feb 1840. He is listed in Lowville, Lewis Co. in the 1835 NY State Census. He was a Democrat and served from 4 Mar 1839 to 3 Mar 1843 as a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives in the 26th and 27th Congresses.

Andrew was also active in seeking his fortune. In 1833-1834 he was a cashier at the Lewis County Bank. In 1835 he lived in Lowville on 10 acres with 2 cows. On 27 Feb 1837 he was appointed one of the Directors of the Lewis County Mutual Insurance Company. In 1838 he was a founding director and vice-president of the Bank of Lowville. In 1840 Andrew, age 40-49, lived in Lowville (page 38) with his wife, 30-39, a son 5-9, a son 15-19, a daughter 0-4, and a daughter 5-9.

When the lure of gold beckoned from California, he was likely associated with the newly formed Lewis County Mining Company in February of 1849. The required money to fund the mining company was not raised because no prospective miner would sign to the articles that required honesty, temperance, Sabbath-keeping, and industry. Andrew joined the about fifty miners who left Lewis County for the gold fields. He is likely the miner listed in the 1850 Census as A. Doig at Negro Bar (Folsom), on the American River, Sacramento Co., CA. He returned shortly, with no success, to Lowville.

In 1853 he moved with his son-in-law, E. George Morris, to Brooklyn, NY. He worked as a clerk at the Custom House from 1853 until 1857. He then returned to Lowville for a time. In 1879 he was retired in Lowville with his unmarried daughters Mary and Emma.

Notes for Paul Doig

Paul's mother died in 1805, and Paul was adopted at the age of four by James Shaw. James was born Mar 1768 in Kilmadock, Perthshire. He emigrated to New York in 1795. He died 24 Nov 1822 in New York City and was buried in the South Argyle Burying Ground. James had made no provision for Paul in his will, so James' three daughters, Margaret McDonald, Mary L. McNiel, and Eleanor L. Stevenson, made a fourth part of the estate for Paul.

In 1850 Paul farmed in Jackson, Washington Co., NY with is wife Abby, children Jane A. and William S., and James Devine (36 DE); the value of his property was $6400. Kirley in the firm of Kirley & Pelton, druggists in Lowville, the business established by his father, John Doig. The firm was renamed Doig and Pelton. Frank's brother, Charles, later bought out the interests of Pelton and the firm was renamed F.C. & C.K. Doig, the largest and most prosperous drug business in the area.

Of Frank it was written, "In business, in social life, in public affairs, he was distinguished by earnestness, enthusiasm and constant usefulness. He was eminently charitable, giving quietly and freely to those whom he found in need, as well as to organizations for charity and benevolence. Perhaps no man in the town was ever mourned by a greater number of friends of all classes of society. His kindly manner, his sympathy and democracy made him one of the most approachable of men and bound to him a legion of intimate friends. he never assumed the possession of superior virtue and was altogether unconscious, apparently, of the great good he wrought in the community. His death was a great loss to the municipality, for the welfare and development of which he worked so sincerely and determinedly. He loved his native town and missed no opportunity to contribute of his time and means to benefit the community."

Frank slipped and fell on some ice on 13 Mar 1909 and suffered a broken hip and rupture of the liver. He continued to hemorrhage and died 2 Apr 1909 in Lowville. Because of the frozen ground he was not buried until 21 May 1909 in Lowville Rural Cemetery.

Notes for Edwin Fennimore Doig

Edwin's birth certificate was reissued on 14 Feb 1942. It was witnessed by his first cousin, Elizabeth (Albertson) West.

In his youth (by early 1902) he would round up wild horses and sell them for $10.00 each. He learned the machinist's trade from his father.

On 5 May 1904 Edwin was sentenced to the Colorado State Reformatory at Buena Vista, Chaffee Co., CO (Inmate No. 1399, Volume 4). Prisoner's Story of Crime: "I stole two horses & wagon from a ranch near Littleton, took them to Routt Co. and left them. Arrested in Eagle Co. & returned to Littleton. Plead guilty. Been in state always. Never arrested before." It was noted that Edwin had a partner in the theft. He was paroled on 14 Apr 1905.

In 1910 Edwin F. Doig was a machinist in an automobile garage residing at 1130 Portland Place, Boulder, Boulder Co., CO (page 109B) with his wife Jennie and sons Albert and Frank.

Edwin served at Ft. Collins, CO in the Signal Corps. He taught wireless at the WMCA in Denver. He was one of the first radio amateurs, and he had a room full of equipment on the second floor of their home and two tall towers. Ed won a contest in about 1918 by relaying a Morse code message from New York to Los Angeles. Edwin was a member of the Elk's Club in Denver, and he played the trumpet, clarinet and violin in their band.

Edwin moved with his family in the fall of 1918 to Los Angeles, CA. He joined his brother, Art, in San Diego, CA in 1919. The family lived at 2044 Columbia Street in San Diego in 1920; a niece, Helen M. Guy, who was born in 1905/6 in CO lived with them. He was unable to find work and returned to Los Angeles later in 1920. In 1930 he was a die maker residing at 624 106th Street, Los Angeles with his wife Jeannie, sons Albert and Frank, and father Edwin. Ed opened the first Packard-Bell Radio dealership in Los Angeles, but he was a poor businessman. He became a tool and die maker for 55 years, and was last employed by Eldon Industries.

In retirement Ed began to compete as a rifle marksman, and he won many trophies. He had a rifling machine in his garage, and made his own gun and stock and loaded his own ammunition. When his back became too bad to shoot in the prone position, he sold his rifles. He bought photography equipment, and became an expert. His evenings were spent with western novels, and he read all the Zane Gray series. S/S #551-01-7845
