Notes for Arnold Agustus Elder

Arnold's father died when he was 1 year old. His nickname was Gus.

On 1 Apr 1877 Arnold and his brother George Franklin Elder left Indiana for Kansas, arriving 34 days later on 4 May 1877 in Ash Rock Township, Rooks Co. He homesteaded a quarter section of land SW-109S-16W on May 22 of 1877. A few years later he bought the adjoining quarter section of SE-10-9-16 where he built the family home. In later years he acquired the quarter section west of his homestead SE-96S-16. The farm was 1 mile south of the Ash Rock Church. [In later years the farmhouse burned down. The barn was moved to the campgrounds east of Woodston and used for the assembly hall. There is now no evidence that improvements were ever at the Elder homestead.]

Arnold's obituary in the Salina Journal tells a little of his character: "No man in Ash Rock township has ever been held in higher respect and esteem, than Mr. Elder. At numerous times he has been called on to fill township offices, and might have been honored more, but he was a quiet unassuming type of man, who preferred to be at home with his family. He was ever a loving husband, a kind and true friend, an affectionate father, and a good neighbor."
