Notes: Euphemia was a dressmaker. She did not marry. Obituary - "The Scotsman" 22 May 1871, page 2: Dundee - Dreadful Fall from a Window - On Saturday, about half-past twelve o'clock, a shocking accident occurred at Crighton's Close, Murraygate, Dundee, which created a great sensation in the neighborhood. A woman, named Euphemia Doig, who occupied a house on the fourth storey of a tenement in the Murraygate, was preparing to hang out cloths to dry at the window looking into the close. The line on which the cloths were to be hung was tied to each side of the window, and to a long pole projecting from it. While leaning on this pole, it gave way, and she fell headlong into the Court below, where the unfortunate woman was found quite dead. It is supposed that death had resulted from a concussion of the brain. The deceased, who was unmarried, was about forty-five years of age, and maintained herself by keeping lodgers.

In 1862 David was an assistant gamekeeper in Buddon, Barry. He became a gardener at Panmure for the Earl of Dalhousie, Monikie. In 1869 David was a gamekeeper. In 1881 he was a keeper of Panmuir Monument in Monikie; all the family was with him except the younger William, who had died.

 

John had organic brain damage from about 1887 and entered the Asylum in Liff. He appears there in the 1891 and 1901 census, remaining until his death in 1915. Witness to his death certificate was the Asylum Head Attendant Alexander Robertson.

Will belonged to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He belonged to the Caledonian Club in Boise, and he would go to meetings dressed in kilts. He was a good-looking man. In 1920 Will was the president of the Idaho Poultry & Pet Stock Association. He had been in the sheep industry, and became renowned as raising the best pure bred chickens in Idaho, specializing in Rhode Island Reds and Buff Leghorns. He was a leading exhibitor. His home and chicken farm was at 607 S. 13th Street in Boise. Will landscaped the grounds at the Union Pacific Railroad Depot in Boise, and was commended for the beautiful flowers and gardens there. He took care of the grounds until he passed away.

      David learned his trade as a gardener. In 1891 David and Mary lived in Monikie with children Mary and David.

     

      David departed Liverpool on the ship SS Lord Clive and arrived at Philadelphia, PA on 25 Apr 1893; he was listed as a tailor on the way to join his brother and sister in Townsend, MT. Mary with children Mary and David arrived in America on 1 Apr 1893, moving on to White Sulphur Springs, MT.  They were naturalized U.S. citizens in 1894.  David worked as a tailor for two years in Helena, MT until he became a rancher on Spring Creek in remote Tierney Basin.  In 1900 he farmed in Brewer Township, Meagher Co., MT (page 8) with his wife Mary, 6 children, and brother John.  In 1920 he farmed at Walled Mountain, Broadwater Co., with his wife Mary, children David B., Pearl (daughter-in-law), Alexander, and Nellie S., and one employee.  They moved to Toston, MT in about 1928.

     

      David raised award winning Brown Leghorn chickens, having won blue ribbons at the Chicago poultry shows.  He even sold chickens to the Russian Government at $100 per fowl.  David also had a green thumb and raised dahlias that grew a foot over his head.  He was know for his red hair and beard.

Notes for Peter Scott Doig

      Peter emigrated to America April 1, 1893 and applied for his naturalization papers by 1900. In 1900 Peter farmed in Brewer Township, Meagher Co., MT (page 8) with his wife Annie C. and sons Edwin and Varick. He had met Annie in Spencer, ID where she was working as a cook in the hotel.  [Another version of the story has him coming over to work for his brother-in-law Donald Campbell near Ringling and meeting Annie when she came to work on the same place in 1898.]

     

      In 1900 Peter and Annie lived in Brewer Township, Meagher Co., MT.  Peter homesteaded a ranch near there in Stewart Basin at Walled Mountain.  It was just west of his brother David's ranch.

     

      Peter died 26 Sept 1910.  Annie told their daughter Anna that Peter had come home drunk and he fell down dead while they were walking by the garden.  She thought he had gotten some poisoned whisky.  Peter was probably buried next to the huge Doig stone in White Sulphur Springs Cemetery.

      Archibald homesteaded property adjoining his parents, but in 1912 he contracted polio and spent two years in a hospital in St. Louis, MO.  He gave up the idea of farming and pursued his aptitude in carpentry.  Archibald earned a B.S. Degree in Industrial Arts from Santa Barbara State Teacher's College in 1918. 

     

      Archibald taught for a year 1919-20 in San Francisco, CA, and Grace was a substitute teacher.  In 1920 he received a teaching position in Stockton, CA, where he taught for 36 years, mainly at Eldorado School.  He also taught woodworking at Stockton High School night school.  He use his skills to build the family home at 1727 West Rose Street in Stockton in 1927.  Grace taught Sunday School at the Presbyterian Church, where the family was active.  In December of 1969 they retired to Bozeman. Edwin last lived at the Frontier Retirement Home, 121 S. 3rd Street, Livingston. Ed was living in Maudlow, MT in 1924 and 1925.  He also lived in Gardiner and was a barber in Trident, MT.  In 1971 he was a barber in Three Forks.  In 1973 he moved to Livingston, MT.  He was a member of American Legion Post #93 of Three Forks, the Odd Fellows #27 of Three Forks, Fraternal Order of Eagles #669 of Gardiner, and the Loyal Order of Moose of Livingston. Notes for James Stuart Doig

      Jim was a cattle rancher at Horse Shoe Hills, MT on the Baxter Place at Poison Hollow from 1933 until his death.  On the neighboring ranch Charles Townsend also ran cattle and shared the forest grazing rights.

     

      Jim died 11 Oct 1940 as the result of a head injury while helping a neighbor, Alvin Cowan; his horse tripped while chasing a cow, and he was thrown so that his head hit a rock.

Notes for Claude Spencer Doig Sr.

      Claude raised thoroughbred stock near Big Timber, MT. He adopted Dora's son Bill. After Dora died, the medical costs about cleaned out Claude.  He then moved to Black Foot, ID, where Bill was living. After he divorced his second wife Bertha, he then moved to Wisconsin to be near his daughter, Darleen. He later married Mayme, but had no children by her or Bertha.

     

      Claude gave up heavy smoking when he developed emphysema.  He spent much time on an oxygen tank during his last years.  Claude (S/S 517-42-9239) died 19 Jan 1991 of cancer at his winter home in Florida.

      Anna told the story that the Governor of Montana had issued a statement that any person who had seven sons would be offered $100.00.  Her father, Peter Scott Doig, had said that with six sons and another on the way he figured that he had a cinch on the money.  However, Anna was born after her father had died, and she was the only daughter.  Anna's middle name "Ellen" was from her mother's midwife when Anna was born.

     

      Anna divorced Lyle and lived in North Platte from May, 1986 until August 1989.  She then returned to Sterling. S/S #536-32-1490.

Notes for Walter Ray Doig

      Ray was a farmer, rancher, dirt contractor, commercial fisherman, heavy equipment operator and street foreman.  He was a member of the Rod and Gun Club, Rotary Club, United Methodist Church in Townsend, a former member of the Townsend High School Board and a county commissioner.  His public spirited activities included the Broadwater Rodeo and Fair, Stream and Lake Development, All School Reunion, Townsend Chamber of Commerce, and the 1989 Montana Centennial Cattle Drive.  He was a recipient of the Jefferson Award in 1981, received a fitness award from the Jaycees, was a city councilman, a city foreman with the street department and a volunteer fireman.  In 1984 he received the Broadwater County Appreciation Service Award.

     

      Ray (S/S #516-24-8243) died 23 Jan 1992 in a head-on car crash with an 18-wheeler on highway 12 north of Townsend.  He apparently had a heart attack prior to the crash.
