Paul grew to manhood on the old homestead, receiving only a common-school education, obtained at

the winter schools, his summers being devoted to work on the farm.  In October, 1854, in company with

his brother, John M. Murray, he came to the United States in search of a home.  They came to Bloomer

township [Montcalm Co., MI], and bought each an eighty-acre lot in section 13.  There were a few acres

chopped on Paul's lot, but none cleared.  For the land he ran in debt three hundred dollars, which at that

time was considered a very large sum.  When not working out by the month he made his home with his

brother, who was married, until his own marriage, on the 5th day of March, 1860, to Miss Martha F.

Warner.  She was born Oct. 7, 1839, in Lyons, Ionia Co., Mich., where her parents, Thaddeus O. and

Philancy (Hutchinson) Warner, were among the earliest settlers, having settled on East Plains when there

were but three families in that part of the township.  They were from Lyons, Wayne Co., N. Y.  To Mr. and

Mrs. Murray there have been born the following children: William Henry and Sarah J., born Jan. 18, 1861

(William H. died July 28, 1873); Lawson W., Sept. 26, 1862; Thaddeus O., June 4, 1864, died Aug. 12,

1864; Paul, Jr., Oct. 27, 1866; Emily, May 1, 1868, and one who died in infancy.  Lawson is now

attending the college in Hillsdale, while Sarah is, and has been for nearly three years, a teacher in the

Carson City school.  After his marriage Mr. Murray at once built a log house on his farm, during which

time they lived with Mr. Robinson.  The house built and ready for occupancy, the newly-married pair

started for the new home, each with an armful of household goods, and this was their wedding-tour.  Their

chairs were a couple of stools made by Mr. Murray, as were their table and bedstead.  But it was home,

and its occupants were animated by bright hopes of the future, which have been more than realized in the

fine farm and beautiful house of which they are now the happy owners.  The eighty acres have been

added to until the farm now embraces one hundred and thirty-one acres, one hundred being under

improvement, the work and result of Mr. and Mrs. Murray's industry and economy.  In politics he is a

Republican, and has always been since he became a citizen.  He has been two terms town treasurer,

three terms highway commissioner, and four years one of the school board.  They have been for many

years consistent members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.  [This biography is taken from "HISTORY

Tuckersmith Pioneers, by John Elder, reprinted from the "Huron Expositor," Seaforth - 3 May 1935:

John Doig - Across the road is the John Doig farm. He is the man who built so many fine barns over such

a large part of Huron County. As I was so familiar and worked so much for Mr. Doig, I must stop to get my

breath so I may start off properly. John Doig took possession of his farm located two miles east of Kippen,

early in the 1860's. He kept batch for a considerable time and many men used to go there to get their hair

cut, as Johnnie used to be quite a barber, and he and my father being both bachelors used to visit back

and forth. Johnnie said he liked to get a meal at my father's as he got lots of sugar in his tea. I really think

John Doig was the first man I knew outside of our own household.

He built a kitchen for my father about 1878, the roof of which had a bad leak where it was joined onto the

other parts, and this kept Johnny Doig fresh in every shower of rain that came through. But this case was

an exception to the rule, for Johnnie accounted for probably more leak-proof building throughout the

country than any other builder. He started to frame when he was but 14 years of age and used the adze

at that age, gradually improving until he was noted far and near as a master barn builder. To this day

there are scores and scores of barns standing in this country, a credit to the builder, also a credit to the

owners. I may say I never knew a barn to blow down or go wrong if it got a half decent chance after it was

built under the supervision of Johnny Doig.

He quit the building and went into draft stallions which was anything but a success. He certainly had all

kinds of experience and he told me himself that it was a very discouraging business. Many a time I have

taken mares up to John Doig's. He used to import stallions himself but he said it would have been better if

he had never seen them. About that time he purchased a portable saw mill which gave him good

satisfaction. He soon got out of the stallion business and started framing again, which he continued as

long as he was able. During his day he had many men engaged to help do the work - some good, some

otherwise. I wonder that he did not go crazy breaking in so many greenhorns for so many years. I have

worked with him a lot and can speak form observation, but he being of a jolly nature, helped everything

along. His wife was a McKay, a sister of George and Dan McKay, who used to live 1-1/4 miles east of

Kippen. She died in the early eighties, leaving a large family of small children - five boys and one

daughter. At John Doig’s funeral there was a great representation of his neighbours and friends and

especially his old framers, who had learned to honour him. I remember him showing me a barn north of

Seaforth he built on contract and he said he lost $700 there and the owner kept fifty more off because he

was not finished on time, so he learned how to contract from that experience.

From the obituary of Margaret Doig:  "When a small child she came with her parents to Howick and has

resided in this township continuously ever since.  She attended the public school at Union S.S. No. 16,

where her children also afterwards attended.  In August, 1868 she was married to Andrew Doig at the age

of seventeen and at that time was considered one of the most beautiful women in the neighborhood.  Her

husband, who predeceased her in February, 1914, was one of the best known and respected residents of

the County, and grew to manhood on the old homestead farm in Tuckersmith township and when twenty

one years of age settled on lot 32, concession C, Howick, to which he brought his young bride two years

later, where they continued to reside for many years, and endured many of the hardships incident to

pioneer life with courage and cheerfulness.  But they lived to see their labors crowned with success, and

to see their children settled around them in pleasant and happy homes.  Some years ago they decided to

retire from the active duties of farm life and built a comfortable residence for themselves in Gorrie, where

Mr. Doig died suddenly five years ago.  Since then she has continued to reside in that village and was

quite healthy and active.  While visiting her son in London this fall she was taken ill, but reached the

residence of her daughter, Mrs. Coghlin, of Listowel, where for several weeks she suffered intense pain,

all of which she bore with courage and Christian resignation, until death relieved her sufferings and her

spirit took its flight to Him who gave it.  The funeral was held on Tuesday from her daughter's residence,

the funeral services being conducted by her pastor, the Presbyterian minister of Gorrie, of which church

deceased had been a life long member... Her remains were laid to rest in the Molesworth cemetery,
