Notes for Robert Doig

Robert enlisted at the age of 15 in the 26th Regiment of Foot in the British Army on 26 April 1813 at Dumfries, Scotland. He was a private and served 5 years and one month at Gibraltar and the remainder in England and Scotland. He transferred to the 47th Regiment on 25 Jan 1824. He was stationed at Colewort Barracks, Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. Robert was discharged on 13 May 1837 from "seven years labouring under a chronic cough, with rheumatic pains and considerable weakness in the small of the back and loins." At the time of his discharge at age 40 he was described as 5 foot 8 inches in height, gray hair, gray eyes, and sallow completion.

In 1841 Robert (40, not Ayr) was an Army Pensioner living on Back Lane, Kilmarnock, Ayr with his wife Jean and children Robert (coal miner), Mary, Agnes, and Emelia. In 1851 he was a Chelsea Pensioner living at Braefoot, Scot's Land, Kilmarnock wiht his wife and Mary, Agnes, Emila, and Thomas.

MARRIAGE:

They pledged marriage on 26 June 1822 at High Church, Paisley, Renfrew, and again 3 Sept 1822 in Kilmarnock.

In 1861 Jean lived in Kilmarnock, Ayr with her son Thomas and daughter Emily. In 1871 Jane was a widow residing at 8 Robertone Place, Kilmarnock with her unmarried children Thomas (dyer) and Emma. Her son Thomas witnessed her death certificate.

He may be the John Sharp who in 1841 was a coal miner along with Charles Sharp and others residing at Thankerton, Bothwell Holytown, Lanark.

John came to the US together on the ship "Brooksby" on 10 Aug 1849; with him were wife Jean, children William (4), Janet (2), and John (3 mo), and brother Charles Sharp. Their original destination was Maryland. They returned to Scotland, and John and Jane came back on the ship "Glasgow" on 11 Aug 1857 with children Janet (11), John (3 America), and Robert (3 mo Scotland).

In 1860 John, Jean, and family lived in LaSalle Co., IL. In 1870 John (52 Scotland) was a grocer and druggist La Salle, La Salle Co., IL (page 320a) with his wife Jane, sons John, Robert, Willie, and Thomas, a clerk in the dry goods store James Shattern (21 Scotland), and a domestic servant (name not know) Doig (45 Prussia); the value of his land was $8,000 with personal assets of $2,000.

GOLDEN, Colo. William L. Doig, M.D., 82, of Golden, Colo., formerly of Spring Valley, died Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011, in Golden, Colo.

He was born Feb. 28, 1929, in Spring Valley to William and Catherine (Carmarlo) Doig.

He attended St. Bede Academy and Creighton University, where he graduated from medical school in 1957. He practiced medicine as a family practitioner for 47 years in Wheat Ridge, Colo.

He was a founding member of the Clear Creek Little League and Over-30 basketball leagues. He was a member of the Colorado Medical Society, Clear Creek Valley Medical Society and American Medical Society. He was inducted into the Jefferson County Sports Hall of Fame.

Surviving are his current wife, Patricia A. Stevinson; eight children, William, David (Trish), Mary Beth, Ellen, Robert (Sarah), Christopher, Damian (Beth) and Peter (Tracy), all living in Colorado; and 17 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Kathleen M. Doig; and his wife of 48 years, Rosemary A. Pearson of DePue.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in St. Joan of Arc Church in Arvada, Colo.
