In 1907 Joe bought an unimproved quarter section in Alcona Twp. He moved his family into a sod dugout, and several months later into a frame house he had built. Several years later he sold the farm and bought the adjoining unimproved quarter section. In 1913 he began a sod house which was destroyed by a week of steady rain. In December of that year a tree he was chopping fell on him and broke his leg. The following February the neighbors came during a break in the weather, and the house was completed in one day. Joe later sold the farm and moved to Stockton were he helped build the courthouse.
The family regularly attended Sunday school and church, joining in the fellowships. Mrs. Koons and Ethel organized a Christian Endeavor which met every Sunday night. To raise money for the church, there were socials where home-made ice cream was sold for 10 cents a dish with all the cake you could eat.
Joe and Della moved to Denver, CO in 1923 and to Edgewater, CO, where they remained for the last 19 years of their lives. He was a member of the Christian Church for 26 years and lived a clean and upright life.
