The document was recorded 20 June 1797 in the Brechin Commissary Court. It records her will written 8 June 1785 in which she nominates Robert Doig, her half-brother and merchant in Dundee as her executor. It also mentions her brother David Doig, weaver in Arbroath, and his children Robert, David, John, and Elizabeth. There was 62 pounds owing from the deceased Alexander Duncan of Lundie. She also assigns her property in Greenfield to Robert Doig. [In a separate document Robert Doig, shipmaster in Arbroath, seised the Greenfield property on 19 Jan 1797.] Husband David Doig was deceased by 1797. The testament testamentar latter will and inventory of the debt and sums of money underwritten resting and owing to the umquhile Elizabeth Doig spouse of David Doig weaver in Green of Dryburgh the time of her decease which was in the month of [blank] seventeen hundred and ninety [blank] years made and given up by herself touching the nomination of her executor and disposition of her good and gear, and the inventory underwritten is faithfully made and given up by Robert Doig manufacturer in Dundee executor nominated by the said defunct in her testamentary disposition and deed of settlement after insert, and the inventory is as follows The foresaid executor gives up resting & owing to the said defunct the time foresaid of her decease the sum of sixty two pounds fourteen shilling sterling, and interest thereof since due contained in the now deceased Alexander Duncan Esquire of Lundie his promissory note to the said Elizabeth Doig dated the thirteenth day of December seventeen hundred and ninety three years, deducting there from two pounds fourteen shillings sterling being one years interest of the said sum received the twentieth day of January seventeen hundred and ninety five and two pounds fourteen shillings sterling received the thirteenth November last as marked on the bank of the said promissory note. Summa of the inventory is sixty two pounds fourteen shillings sterling and interest as above deducing as above deduced. Follows an extract of the defuncts testamentary disposition and deed of settlement (here take it in) James Wyllie Esquire Commissary confirmed at Brechin the 20th day of June 1797, John Ogilvie writer in Dundee cautioner at Forfar the twentieth day of December seventeen hundred and ninety six years in presence of Patrick Chalmers of Auldbar Esquire advocate sheriff depute of Forfarshire compeared Forfar conform to the clause of registration therein contained the same to be done whereof the tenor follows Know all men by these presents me Elizabeth Doig spouse of David Doig weaver in Ground of Dryburgh for the love favor and affection which I have and do bear to David Doig weaver in Arbroath my brother german [same mother and father] & to Robert Doig manufacturer in Dundee my brother consanguinean [same father but not same mother] and to the persons after mentioned and for certain other onerous causes good and weighty motives moving me to the granting hereof to have given granted disponed as I do by these presents give grant alienate and dispone from me my heirs and all others my assigns to and in favor of the said David Doig my brother his heirs or assigns heritably and irredeemably all and whole that tenement of land lying in Greenfield near Dundee disponed to me by [blank] as particularly described in my rights and infeftments thereof and all other heritable subjects belonging to me and I do hereby assign the said David Doig into the writes thereof and into the rents after my death and for the causes foresaid I do hearby assign and dispone to and in favor of the said Robert Doig my brother consanguinean in case he survive me but with and under the burdens and provisions after mentioned all an sundry goods gear cloth and cloathing bed and bedding weaving apparel and whole other means and effects of whatsoever name nature or denomination the same be presently pertaining an belonging or that shall happen to pertain and belong to me the time of my death whether with or without security together with the securities themselves As also all debts and sums of money at the time foresaid may be due adebted and resting to me by whatever person or persons whoever secured with the securitys thereof dispencing with the generality hereof & admitting these presents to be as valid effectual & suffiecint as if most special and particular surrogating & substituting the said Robert Doig in my full right and place of the premises with full power to him immediately after my death to ask crave uplift & receive the said debts and sums of money and if needful to pursue therefore by order of law And upon payment to grant discharges which shall be sufficient to the receivers and also to take keep and detain profession of roup [auction] sell or otherwise dispose upon the goods gear and others generally before assigned and in general to do every other thing anent the premises the law directs but providing and declaring always as it is hereby specially provided and declared that the said Robert Doig is and shall be by acceptation hereof be burdened bound and obliged to content and pay my just and lawfull debts with the expenses of my funeral And in particular to pay to the said David Doig my husband during his lifetime after my death an annuity of one pound ten shillings sterling in terms of the contract of marriage between him and me And further that he shall deliver to Elizabeth Doig daughter to the said David Doig my brother my whole wearing apparel & shall divide equally among Robert David & John Doigs sons of the said David Doig my brother & the said Elizabeth Doig their sister my whole cloth and Clothing cutt and uncut bed and bedding of all kings & they are hereby empowered to call for the same immediately after my death And moreover that the said Robert Doig my brother shall be obliged to content and pay to the said David Doig my brother german in liferent during all the days of his lifetime for his liferent use only and to the said Robert David John and Elizabeth Doigs his children equally among them their heirs executors or assigns in fee the same of forty pounds sterling and that at the first term of Whitsunday or Martinmas making six months after my death with annual rent therefore thereafter during the net payment with and under which burdens and provisions I do hereby nominate & appoint the said Robert Doig my sole executor universal legator & intrometter with my whole moveable goods and gear before assigned with power to him to give up the same in inventory for ordinary confirmation to be had thereon and generally every other thing to that any other executor testamentar might or could do in the like case reserving always hereby to me my liferent of the premises and full power and liberty to me at any time in my life and even on deathbed to alter or renew these presents in whole or in part as I shall see proper which if not done by me by a write under my hand I hereby declare the same to be a valid evident altho found lying by me or in the custody of any other person at the time of my death with the net delivery whereof I have dispenced & hereby dispence for ever And I consent to the registration hereof in the Books of Council & Session or others competent therein to remain for preservation & thereto I constitute James Wyllie writer in Forfar my Provs attour to the end the said David Doig my brother & foresaids my be more conveniently infeft and seased in the foresaid subjects, I hereby devise and require you [blank] and each of you conlie & seallie my bailies in that part that on sight hereof ye pass to the ground of the foresaid subjects & then give & deliver heretable state and seisen real actual and corporal possession of all and haill the foresaid tenement of land lying in Greenfield & bounded as in the rights and infeftments thereof to the said David Doig & foresaids & that by tradition & delivery of earth & stone of the ground of the said subjects into the hands of the said David Doig or foresaids or into the hands of his or theire certain attourney or attorneys in his or their name bearers hereof and this in no ways ye leave undone without delay whereanent these presents shall be your warrant sufficient in witness whereof I subscribe these presents wrote on this and the two preceding pages of stampt paper by John Lamb servant to John Ogilvie writer in Dundee Att Dundee the eight day of June on thousand seven hundred & eighty five years before these witnesses James Gray merchant Dundee John Baxter and John Watson writers Robert's testament was recorded 7 Dec 1824 in the Aberdeen Sheriff Court. It repeats his contract of marriage with Agnes Dingwall, daughter of the deceased Alexander Dingwall, merchant in Aberdeen, in which 3,000 pounds seals the agreement. Besides assignment of property it mentions the only surviving child by his first marriage to Euphemia Maver, Thomas Doig, who was allocated 700 pounds sterling. Although much is said of potential children by Robert and Agnes, there were none.
MARRIAGE to Euphemia Maver: The marriage was recorded the same day in Arbroath. Robert was listed as the Reverend assistant minister in Arbroath, and Euphemia from Dundee.
MARRIAGE to Agnes Dingwall: Robert and Agnes pledged marriage on 3 Nov 1819 at Old Machar, Aberdeen. Their contract of marriage was written 7 Nov 1819, its contents recorded with Robert's testament in 1824.

Robert went to sea at the age of 13 in 1784 on the "Good Albert" (36 tons) as Boy; he served as Mate and then Master in the coasting trade. In 1812 Robert was Master of the "Venus" (45 tons) in the coasting trade; in 1828 as Master of the "Amber" (55 tons) in the coasting trade; in 1830 Mate on the "Active" (70 tons) in the London trade; in 1837 as Mate on the "Isabella" (70 tons) in the coasting trade. In 1841 Robert was a pilot and ship owner living with Isabel and their daughter Mary at Homehead, Old Homehead, Arbroath.
Robert's testament was recorded 5 Mar 1849 in the Forfar Sheriff Court.

Thomas studied at the Universities, Aberdeen and Edinburgh, New College, Edinburgh, and Marischal College, Aberdeen, with a degree 2 Apr 1812. The church licensed Thomas on 9 May 1816, and he was ordained a minister of the Church of Scotland, free and protesting, in Arbroath 23 Dec 1819. In Arbroath he lived at Toer Nock. He signed the Act of Separation and Deed of Demission, and was translated to the parish church in Torryburn, Fife, in July 1832. He was minister of the Free Church Congregation of the Parish, and the family lived in the Torryburn Manse.

David was a linen weaver and pendicler (small-acreage farmer) at Nether Dryburgh, Liff.
Four shillings was paid for the mortcloth at David's burial. The testament of David Doig, weaver in Lochee, parish of Liff, was recoreded 9 Jan 1816 in the St. Andrews Commissary Court:
"The testament dative & inventory of the goods gear and debts of umquhill David Doig late weaver in Lochee within the parish of Liff and Sheriffdom of Forfar the time of his death which was upon the twenty sixth day of November eighteen hundred and fifteen years faithfully made and given up by Margaret Peebles residing in Lochee executrix dative qua relict discerned to the said defunct after due citation by public edict of all parties having or pretending to have interest and none other compearing to accept of the said office by decreet of the Commissary of St. Andrews dated the twenty seventh day of December eighteen hundred and fifteen.
The said executrix gives up for confirmation the sum of five pounds sterling part of the principal sum of fifty five pounds sterling contained in deposit receipt granted by Mssrs Simes and Anderson agents for the British Linen Company at Dundee to the said defunct dated the fifth day of November last. Summa inventory.

Notes: Article in "The Scotsman" 3 Aug 1866, page 2: Sheriff Crimina Court - Trial for Theft. - Yesterday at the Sheriff Criminal Court, David Doig Saunders and John Laird, Carnegie Street, were charged before Sheriff Davidson and a jury with theft committed on several occasions in the latter end of May. Laird was also indicted on the alternative charge of reset of theft. Both the prisoners pleaded not guilty, and the case went to trial. From the evidence it appeared that the prisoners stole different articles of clothing from a lane in Jamaica Street on the 28th May. The day following, the couple repaired to the Waverley Bridge Station, and stole therefrom a portmanteau containing gentleman's attire. About two o'clock in the morning on the 1st June, the prisoners had gone to the Market Street terminus of the North British Railway, and, while in the act of carrying away a servant's chest containing a complete wardrobe, were detected by two watchmen, and, after a desperate struggle, captured and taken to the Police Office. The jury, without retiring, unanimously found the prisoners guilty of theft and assault. Doig was sentenced to fifteen months', and Laird to twelve months' imprisonment.
