On John's tombstone - shield with loom, shuttle and weaver's tools; also initials I D [son John Doig] and

A B [daughter-in-law Agnes Brown].

Note: More children were probably born between 1738 and 1749. I probable brother was William Doig on file WILL1711.

John married Agnes Christie  on 14 Jul 1735 in Eassie & Nevay, Angus, Scotland. Agnes was born about 1714 in Of Eassie & Nevay, Angus, Scotland. She was buried in Nevay Churchyard, Nevay, Angus, Scotland.

They had the following children:

2 M        i.  Boy Doig  was born in 1736 in Kirkinch, Nevay, Angus, Scotland. He was christened on 2 Jul 1736 in West Kirk, Eassie & Nevay, Angus, Scotland.

Second Generation

4. John Doig  (John) was born in 1749 in Kirkinch, Nevay, Angus, Scotland. He was christened on 29 May 1749 in Eassie & Nevay, Angus, Scotland. He was buried in Nevay Churchyard, Nevay, Angus, Scotland.

John was a farmer in Kirkinch of Nevay.

John and his wife were buried with his father in the Nevay Churchyard.

John married Agnes Brown  on 12 Jun 1777 in Eassie & Nevay, Angus, Scotland. Agnes was born about 1756 in Of Nevay, Angus, Scotland. She was buried in Nevay Churchyard, Nevay, Angus, Scotland.

7. Robert Doig  (John) was born on 12 Nov 1755 in Of Eassie & Nevay, Angus, Scotland. He died before 1834 in Of Glamis, Angus, Scotland.

The link of Robert to parents is not recorded in the parish records, but based on age, location (Glamis

and Eassie & Nevay are neighboring parishes), and an eldest son named John. Also there were multiple

Doig and Neave (Nevay) marriages indicating a close link between the families:

Elspeth Doig #8 married John Neave.

David Doig #10 married Agnes Neave.

Henrietta Doig #12 married Charles Neave.

As Robert was a shoemaker, there is also the possibility he is the son of George Doig, shoemaker in

Glamis, and Euphem Ogilvie (see file GEOX1685). Also, David Doig (see file DAVE1750) may be a

brother as they both had oldest sons named John and lived in Newtown, Glamis; this would suggest

their father was named John. [If you are a male Doig descendant please join our DNA Project.]

Robert was a shoemaker in Dundee and later a master shoemaker in Glamis. He also worked as a

handloom weaver. He is listed in the 1801 Glamis list of military men as a "piker."

Death presumed before 1834 as deaths were recorded in Glamis from that year, and Robert does not

appear.

A copy of births from a family Bible or similar paper, written in old script, lists Robert as married twice,

with 12 children by Isabella Neave and 6 children by Jean Brymer. [1974 photocopy of 1896 "birthday

book" made by William James Keilor Dick, son of Ann Swanson Doig, Robert's great-granddaughter;

document in the possession of Betsy Doig (1887-1963).]

Robert married (1) Isabella Neave  daughter of George Neave. Isabella was born on 1 May 1756 in Newtown, Glamis, Angus, Scotland. She died about 1809 in Of Glamis, Angus, Scotland. Her father George was christened on 1 Aug 1731 in Glamis, the son of George Neave/Nevay.

Birth date taken from family records. The Glamis parish records Isobel Nevay daughter to George.

Newtown between the entry for April 29 and May 16, 1756; it is presumed she was christened on

Sunday, May 2 or Sunday May 9 with the day not recorded.

Robert and Isabella had the following children:

The link to parents is uncertain and based on age, location, a daughter named Elspeth, and only Jean

Brymer in parish records; a son by Robert's prior wife was named George.

Two possible entries in 1841 census:

Jane Doig (62 Angus) lived in Plans of Thornton, Glamis, Angus with farmer David Craig (68 Angus) and

wife Jane [Doig], with children William, Margaret, Mary, and May. [See DAVE1620]

[This connection is based on George having been born in 1784/5 in Glamis in the 1851 census and the
