Notes for Stephen A. Turner

Stephen was reported to have come to IL with his parents when he was 7 years old, but the family must have returned to KY.

 

Stephen and his sisters and brother were orphaned by 1832. They were looked out for by a Baptist Minister John S. Higgins (in 1850 his aunt Polly Turner lived with the family of John S. Higgins in District 2, Lincoln Co., KY, page 304).

 

In 1850 Stephen was a plasterer living in Moultrie County, IL with his wife Barbary and children Susanna E., Agness, Mary A., and Wm. F. In 1860 he was a plasterer living in Lovington, Moultrie County (page 76) with Barbary and children Agnes J., Mary A., Wm. F., Margaret A., Eliza C., John S., Nancy J., and George H.; also in the household was Adam Berry, born 1809/10 in NC. In 1870 he was a farmer in Lovington with wife Barbara and children Eliza C., John S., Nancy J., George H., Christeana, Charity E., and Charles A.; the value of his land was $12,000 and personal property at $2,000. In 1880 he was a plasterer and tradesman in Lovington with his wife and children Nancy, George, Charity, Charles, and Commodore Perry. Stephen was listed in the 1889 land road tax in Lovington.

 

Stephen was a resident of the Lovington vicinity for more than half a century. He bought up cheap swamp land and drained it to make farm land of it. There they shot brandts and ducks. He had narrow shovels to dig narrow trenches in the muddy swampland; then he laid four-inch tile to drain the water off. One of Stephen`s buildings housed the Post Office. Overhead was a big room they held dances in, a familiar saying was "It was just a ball in Turner`s hall, that was all."

 

Stephen moved to MO in 1899. He "owned over 400 acres of land in the Lanton neighborhood and business property in Lovington and Hammond in addition to a fine farm in Missouri. His large estate was accumulated by his own industry and frugality. In his younger days he followed farming and stock raising, and when work in these lines were slack he devoted his time to the trade of plasterer, at which he was an expert."

Former Resident Dies in Missouri. Stephen Turner Passes Away at the Age of Eighty-seven.

Stephen Turner, aged 87 years and 20 days, a former resident of the vicinity, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Chas. Mccune, near Downing, Mo., Monday, October 23. Funeral services and burial were held at that place Wednesday. Stephen Turner was born near Frankfort, Ky., October 3, 1818. He came to Illinois with his parents when 7 years of age. He was married to Miss Barbara Deeds, March 9, 1842. To them were born nine children, five sons and four daughters who are as follows: George H., Frank, Charley, John S., Mrs. Ed. Bennett and Mrs. Matt Crowder, who live in this vicinity, and Mrs. J. M. White and Mrs. Charley McCune, who live in Missouri, and on son, Perry, who liveds in Nebraska. Mrs. Turner died a Downing, Mo., January 9, 1901.

Deceased was a resident of this vicinity for more than half a century but for the past six years he had made his home in Missouri. He was closely identified with the development of Moultrie county and had a vivid recollection of the early days in Illinois. He owned over 400 acres of land in the Lanton neighborhood and business property in Lovington and Hammond in addition to a fine farm in Missouri. His large estate was accumulated by his own indurstry and frugality. In his younger days he followed farming and stock raising, and when work in these lines were slack he devoted his time to the trade of plasterer, at which he was an expert.

Mr. Turner enjoyed the respect and confidence of the community and his many friends here sympathize with the bereaved family and relatives.

"Elisa E. Burnett was born in Cataract, Owen county, Indiana, April 3, 1859. Died at her home near Lanton Station, Moultrie Co., Ill., Jan. 15, 1900 of typhoid fever. She was married to Geo. H. Turner, Nov. 11, 1880. Six children have been born to them, three boys and three girls, all of whom with the sorrowing husband, survive to mourn the loss of a tender, loving mother and faithful wife.

Mrs. Turner became a Christian in her girlhood, giving her heart, and the allegiance of her life to Jesus Christ unreservedly.

Neighbors and friends who knew her intimately speak in the highest terms of her beautiful and consistent Christian character, which found it's expression and demonstration, not in mere profession, but in a daily life of unselfish devotion to her home, her friends and her Heavenly Master. A marked tribute of the esteem in which she was held, was witnessed by the immense throng who attended the funeral services and followed her body to

the grave.

Her death was a very happy one, songs of salvation and praise were upon her lips during her illness, for like Enoch of old, she had the testimony before her departure that she pleased God.

Funeral services were conducted at the family residence, by Rev. W. F. Stevenson, at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning. Burial at the Turner cemetery."

Emily "Emma" Catherine Strayer was born April 27 1882 at Rockport, MO, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Strayer. She died on 12 Sep 1942 at Harlingen, TX. When she was a small girl she moved with her parents and other family members to Mahaska, KS, where she attended school and grew to womanhood. In 1893 (?) she married Elmer Turner in Washington County. Nine children were born to this union all of whom were living at the time of her death except a son, Beryl, who died in 1919 [alive in 1920 census]. The family lived in Broughton and later in Alta Vista [both in Clay Co., KS]. Mr Turner died 11 Dec 1924 and Mrs. Turner and the children remained in Alta Vista. In May 1929 Mrs. Turner married Herman Kahle of Alta Vista and in later years they lived in Harlingen, TX. The obit lists the children as follows: Neta and Neva of Harlingen, TX; Inez Payne and Mrs. Wilma Peterson of Detroit, MI, Nellie Rankin of Peabody, KS, Kenneth Turner of Clay Center, KS, James Turner of Lock Springs, MO, and Glenn Turner of Boise, ID. It also mentions that she had 5 sisters and 3 brothers and her husband Herman Kahle were still living at her death. Funeral Services were conducted at the Peterson-Neill Chapel in Clay Center, KS, and burial at Broughton (Clay County) cemetery.

Notes for George Anderson Turner

George was a farm hand, always wanting a farm of his own, but he went broke during the big depression when he had a thousnd chicks and a couple of big coops. Eighty percent of his chickens died of lchicken pox just before they were old enough to start laying. He moved us up to the

state of Washington then on a 17-acre stump ranch. He worked hard and tried to clear the land, but couldn`t afford the equipment for it. He tried the shipyards along with his son Norval in 1943, but his eyes could not stand the welders` flashes, so he became a custodian of schools and other large

buildings, and that`s what he was the rest of his life.

 

He met Harriet while working as a farm hand in Utah, and they married after several years.

 

How he ended up in Utah, he was working his way west to see the big Redwoods after WW1 (He was in it for a short time), became interestefd in the LDS Church and never made it to the redwoods till Norval took him there about eight months before his death. He stood standing, gazing

up at those magnificent trees.

McConnelsville - James M. Turner, 79, of McConnelsville, a former superintendent of McConnelsville school system, died at 2:30 a.m. Monday (Aug. 22), at Fairfield, Conn. following a long illness. Boring in Lovinginton, Ill., Jan 21, 1887, he was the son of George and Eliza Burnett Turner. He retired from his position as superintendent of schools in 1948. He was a member of Trinity Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge of St. Paris, OH and a member and past president of the Ohio Education Association.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. William (Eleanor) Donnely of Fairfield, Mrs Charles (Linda) Whitaker of Norfold, Va., Mrs. H. W. (Martha) Dean of Columbus; a brother S. Oral Turner of Monticello, Ill., a sister Mrs. Carl Velzy of Dayton; and nine grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Fisher Funeral Home here. Burial will be in Mcconnelsville Cemetery. Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
