The following marriage is uncertain and based on approx. age, location, and a daughter named Henrietta like his younger sister.

 

James lived at the Miln of Balkirrie, Nevay.

David may have sired an illegitimate son, David, by Susan White in 1772.  See file DAVE1747 for those descendants.

 

David was a farmer and brewer in Kirkinch of Nevay. In 1841 David Doig (94 not Perth) lived on independent means with the family of his son George Doig at Nether Logie, Meigle, Perth.

 

David married (MRIN:3) Agnes Butchart on 22 Aug 1777 in Nevay, Angus, Scotland. Agnes was born about 1751 in Of Auchterhouse, Angus, Scotland. She died before 1798 in Of Nevay, Angus, Scotland.

She may be the Agnes christened 27 July 1751 in Auchterhouse, the daughter of John Butchart and Grizall Kid. David was listed from Nevay and Agnes from Auchterhouse.

In 1841 William farmed at Kirkinch of Nevay with his wife Elspeth, children James (agricultural laborer) and Isabella, and a field servant Elizabeth Robertson (15 Angus). In 1851 William farmed 40 Acres, employing 2 men in District 4 of Eassie.  He was a widower at that time, and living with him were his children Elisabeth and James, grandson William Wilkie, and a servant Nancy McIntosh.

 

The Inventory, Disposition, and Settlement of the testament of William Doig, farmer, Kirkinch was recorded 1 sep 1854 in the Forfar Sheriff Court (SC47/40/22).

 

William married (MRIN:6) Elspeth Keay, daughter of Andrew Keay and Elspet Baxter (MRIN:11), on 12 Dec 1807 in Eassie & Nevay, Angus, Scotland. Elspeth was born in 1779 in Meigle, Perth, Scotland. In 1861 Catherine was a grocer at Meegle House, Meigle, Perth with daughters Agnes, Elizabeth, and Helen.

 

The informant to Catherine's death certificate was her son David Bruce of Portswood, Southampton, not present.

 

Catherine married (MRIN:8) George Bruce on 20 Nov 1807 in Meigle, Perth, Scotland. George was born in 1780/1781 in Coupar Angus, Perth, Scotland. He died in 1851/1854 in Of Meigle, Perth, Scotland.

In 1841 George was a builder residing at South of the Bridge, Meigle, Perth with his wife Catherine and daughters Agnes, Elizabeth, and Helen. In 1851 he was a mason at Myreside, Meigle with Catherine, daughters Elizabeth and Helen, and grandchild Robert Bruce (72? Newtyle).

14. David Doig (David, William) was born in 1786 in Kirkinch, Nevay, Angus, Scotland. He was christened on 8 Nov 1786 in Nevay, Angus, Scotland. He died in Jan/Mar 1866 in Chelsea, London, Middlesex, England.

David Doige, a weaver, age 20, born in Nevay, joined the 52nd Regiment of Foot on 17 Feb 1808 at Stirling Castle. His service of 22 years and 134 days included as Private from 17 Feb 1808 to 24 Nov 1813, a Corporal from 25 Nov 1813 to 16 Mar 1814, and a Private from 17 Mar 1814 to 30 June 1830. He served 1½ years in Holland and 2½ in France; he also served in Canada.

 

At David’s own request he was discharged at age 42 on 30 June 1830. He was described as 5’5”, dark hair, dark eyes, and dark complexion. The officer noted he was a “good soldier in the field but addicted to drink.”

 

In 1851 David Daige (62 Dundee) was a Chelsea pensioner residing at Sophia Place, Landport, Portsea, Hampshire, England with his wife Martha, unmarried son Peter (mariner), unmarried daughter Isabella, daughter-in-law Hariett, and grandson John. In 1861 David Doige (73 Scotland) was a widower and musician residing at 25 Sophia Place, Landport with his daughter-in-law Harriet and grandsons John, James, and Thomas. He died at a reported age of 77.

 

David married (MRIN:9) Martha. Martha was born in 1788/1789 in Sandredy, Kent, England. She died in Jan/Mar 1852 in Portsea, Hampshire, England.

In 1841 Martha Doige (50, England, not Hampshire), occupation "stay m", lived at Sophia Place, Landport, Portsea, Hampshire with her daughters Martha (15) and Bella (14).

 

They had the following children.

David Doige enlisted in the 52nd Regiment of Foot on 13 Oct 1830, the same regiment from which his father had just been discharged. In 1841 David Doige (25, not Hampshire) was a soldier at Cambridge Barracks, Portsmouth, Hampshire, England.

 

         54   F      ii.   Martha Doige was born in 1816/1821 in England.

         55   F     iii.   Ann Doige was born in 1818/1819 in Wolverton, Hampshire, England. Link to father uncertain. Ann married (MRIN:171) Thomas Butter in Jul/Sep 1839 in Portsea, Hampshire, England. Thomas was born in 1811/1812 in Baughurst, Hampshire, England. In 1881 Thomas was an agricultural laborer residing at Stoney Heath, Wolverton, Hampshire with his wife Ann. 

+       56   M    iv.   John Doige was born in 1819/1820. He died in Apr/Jun 1895.

         57   M     v.   Peter Doige was born on 15 Mar 1822 in Clonmell, Tipperary, Ireland.

Peter served as a Boy in the Royal Navy, but he was not in foreign service. He joined the Merchant Service as a mariner on 20 Jan 1850, issued at sea aboard the "Pluto"; at the time he was 5' 4-1/2" tall (Certificate #363957). In 1851 he was an unmarried mariner living with his parents at Sophia Place, Landport, Portsea, Hampshire, England. 

         58   F     vi.   Isabella Doige was born in 1826/1828 in NA, Halfax.

 

 

16. George Doig (David, William) was born on 19 Dec 1798 in Kirkinch, Nevay, Angus, Scotland. He was christened on 1 Jan 1799 in Nevay, Angus, Scotland. He died on 1 Apr 1874 in Knowhead, Menmuir, Angus, Scotland from heart disease.

In 1841 George (42 not Perth) farmed at Nether Logie, Perth with is wife Jean (42 not Perth), children Andrew, Ann, Jean, William, and Elizabeth, and father David Doig (94 not perth). In 1851 George was a farmer of 140 acres at Nether Logie, Meigle, Perthshire.  He employed 4 persons.  David and Andrew had moved out of the home.  In 1860-63 he was a farmer at Ardovie Manse, Brechin.

 

Witness to George's death certificate was his son William.

 

George married (MRIN:10) Jane Whitton, daughter of Andrew Whitton and Ann Crichton (MRIN:28), on 13 Dec 1829 in Newtyle, Angus, Scotland. Jane was born in 1798 in Newtyle, Angus, Scotland. She was christened on 6 Aug 1798 in Newtyle, Angus, Scotland. She died on 12 Jan 1872 in Mains of Ardovie, Brechin, Angus, Scotland from chronic asthma.

Witness to Jane's death certificate was her son George. George was listed from Eassie and Jane from Newtyle.

In 1851 Andrew was a farmer of 63 acres employing 1 man at Denend, Newtyle. In 1856 Andrew was a farmer at Denend, Newtyle.  In 1881 Andrew was a widower and farmer of 325 acres in Brechin, Angushire. In 1901 he farmed at Middle Drumo Farm Ho with wife Isabella and 2 female servants.

 

An extract of Andrew's testament reads: Andrew Doig, Tenant, Farm of Middle Drums, Brechin, died 25 June 1902, at Middle Drums, testate. Confirmation grated at Forfar, 14 August 1902, to William Doig, Farmer, Carcary, Farnell, Harry Lindsay Jackson, Farmer, Mains of Balhall, Menmuir, William Anderson, Solicitor, Brechin, George Doig, son of the said William Doig, and Isabella Bell or Doig, Middle Drums aforesaid, his widow, Executors nominated in Will or Deed, dated 12 May 1897, and Codicil, dated 7 July 1898, and recorded in Court Books of Commissariot of Forfar, 8 August 1902. Value of Estate, £5,520, 10s. 4d.

 

Andrew married (MRIN:29) Mary Simpson, daughter of Charles Simpson and Elisabeth Anderson "Betsy" (MRIN:77), on 20 Nov 1856 in Hatton, Newtyle, Angus, Scotland. Mary was born on 9 Nov 1831 in Alyth, Perth, Scotland. She died in 1880 in Brechin, Angus, Scotland.

They were married at the bride’s home.  Witnesses were William Smith and David Murray.

 

Andrew also married ( 2:MRIN:30) Isabella Bell, daughter of James Bell and Jessie Langlands (MRIN:78), in 1884 in Brechin, Angus, Scotland. Isabella was born in 1840 in Liff, Angus, Scotland. She was christened on 6 Oct 1840 in Liff, Benvie & Invergowrie, Angus, Scotland. She died on 17 Oct 1908 in Carnoustie, Barry, Angus, Scotland.

Isabella's death was recorded in Barry. An extract of her testament reads: Isabella Bell or Doig, 3 Douglas Place, Carnoustie, widow, died 17 October 1908, at Carnoustie, testate. Confirmation granted at Dundee, 19 January 1909, to John Henderson Pattullo, Farmer, Pitskelly near Carnoustie, Alexander Bell Pattullo, Butcher, 24 Keptie Street, Arbroath, and William John Rollo, Banker there, Trustees nominated by the Lords of Council and Session confirm to Extract Act and Decree, dated 28 November 1908. Will or Deed, dated 21 February 1898, and recorded in Court Books of Commissariot of Forfar, 13 January 1909. Value of Estate, £3,442, 15s. 1d.

 

+       61   F     iii.   Ann "Anne, Annie" Doig was born on 26 Apr 1834. She died on 24 Apr 1867.

         62   F     iv.   Jane Doig was born on 19 Mar 1836 in Nether Logie, Meigle, Perth, Scotland. She was christened on 31 Mar 1836 in Meigle, Perth, Scotland. She died in 1911 in Brechin, Angus, Scotland.

Jane married (MRIN:32) Peter Milne, son of James Milne and Mary Jolly (MRIN:81), on 13 Aug 1869 in Mains of Ardovie, Brechin, Angus, Scotland. Peter was born on 17 Mar 1833 in Crathie & Braemar, Aberdeen, Scotland.

On 31 July 1872 the Brechin Procurator Fiscal Office corrected the entry to show cause of death as “suicide by drowning.” George's testament was recorded 22 Jan 1873 and 22 Apr 1874 in the Forfar Sheriff Court.

In 1869 and 1874 he was a stone mason, having moved to 102 Ridgeway Road. In 1881 his wife, son Thomas (traveller) and Eliza (scholar) were at home. In 1881 George was a retired mason living in Withington, Lancashire; at home were his wife and son William.

[The marriage certificate to Margaret Scott in 1860 lists William as a widower and the son of John Doig (deceased), laborer, and Jessie McQueen or McQuean (deceased).  In the 1881 census he is listed born 1810/1 in Coupar Angus. His death certificate lists his parents as unknown.]

 

In 1836 William was a millwright in Dundee.  In 1843-8 he was a boilermaker. In 1841 William lived in Dundee with his wife Hellen and children Elizabeth and Peter. In 1851 William was a mechanic living at the Joint Stock Building, Dundee; his wife was not in the household. In 1861 he was a boilermaker at 24 William Street, Glasgow. In 1871 he was a milk dealer at 86 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow; at the same address was son Andrew, as spirit dealer. In 1881 he was again a boilermaker living with Margaret in Barony, Lanark.

 

William's second marriage may have been to his half sister, also daughter of Janet (Jessie) McQueen of about the same age.

 

The informant on William's death certificate was his son-in-law Donald McTaggart.

Ellen and son John returned for a visit to Scotland; they returned from Glasgow on the "Columbia" and arrived at Ellis Island on 16 June 1913.

 

Alexander was naturalized in 1913. In 1920 he was a machinist residing at 168 Maple, Kearney, Hudson Co., NJ with his wife Ellen and children Catherine, Ellen Jardine, Elspeth, Mary Jardine, and John. In 1930 he lived at 123 Rutherford Place, Kearny with wife Ellen and son John. In 1940 he was a widower living at 123 Rutherford Place, Kearny with his daughter Isabella Shaw (widow).

In 1930 was the superintendent of the YMCA at  37 Stanford Avenue, Plainfield with Annie, daughter Margaret (stenographer in a doctor's office), daughter Elizabeth Le Poldevin and her husband William, and a roomer. In 1940 he was a YMCA worker at the same address with Annie (looks like Emmie R.).
